Don’t walk, run to Dollar General.

According to TikToker Ivan (@ivangtv), as of Nov. 21, “Dollar General is about to mark down thousands of items to just one penny.”

Ivan explains that when “items have made it all the way through their clearance cycle and still haven't sold, … employees need to go take them off the shelf, but if you get to them first before they take them down, you can get them for one penny.”

Ivan shares his tips and tricks for finding these deals before they are removed from the shelf. His first tip is to download the Dollar General app, and have the app handy as you shop. “The only way you're gonna be able to check if these items are exactly one penny is to scan them on the Dollar General app first,” he says.

For his second tip, he suggests you shouldn’t mention the penny deal to the sales associates.  “It's technically their fault that they haven't gotten them off the shelf yet, so you're not really supposed to call them out on it,” he shares.

He lets viewers know how to identify these penny deals in the store. “You're supposed to look for ones that have the green dot on them,” he shares. The green dot typically lives on the item’s price tag. “If they have the green dot, that means they've gotten to the end of their clearance life and they're about to be taken off the shelf,” he shares.

To make things easier, he even shares a rough estimate of items that are potentially included in this penny deal. His list includes some items in these categories: back to school, home, Halloween, apparel, candy, Fourth of July, patriotic party, dinnerware, as well as spring and summer.

This viral video has over 1.7 million views and hundreds of comments. Many viewers shared their experiences trying to find these dollar deals. “Omg, it’s been crazy this week already. I went in today to get an aluminum pan and there was a man with 4 buggies packed!!! His total was $1.27,” one viewer commented.

Others shared that their local Dollar General wouldn’t let them purchase the 1-cent deals. “My dollar general told me that they won’t be able to sell them to me,” one commented. A Dollar General employee chimed in, confirming this viewer experience, “I work at Dollar General. My store personally won’t even allow people to buy penny items.”

‘You also get the chips at the table’: Customer says eating out at Mexican restaurant is more budget-friendly than cooking at home. Here’s why https://www.dailydot.com/news/mexican-restaurant-cheaper-than-cooking/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 03:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1438297 Customer says eating out at Mexican restaurant is more budget-friendly than cooking at home. Here's why

A TikTok creator who frequently uses his platform to post cooking videos posted a viral video saying that eating at Mexican restaurants can be more budget-friendly than cooking at home.

TikToker @bandrhomestead has received over 776,000 views and 102,000 likes on his post as of publication.

At the start of his video, the TikToker says his clip is for the people who say, "Hey, let's go home and eat so that we can save a little bit of money."

"You're a liar, liar," he says.

Next, he reads his receipt from Publix, where he just finished shopping. For white Cheddar cheese, he paid $6.49, and for tortilla chips, he paid $5.99.

"That's like $12.50 just for chips and queso," he adds.

He then uses TikTok's greenscreen filter to speak over a screenshotted photo of a Mexican restaurant's menu. "It's officially budget-friendly to go to Mexican," he says.

He points out a menu item called Choriqueso, which contains cheese and chorizo and costs $8.95. "That gives me like an extra almost $4 to go toward my entree," he says.

"You also get the chips at the table, and then you also get salsa," he adds. "So this idea that we're gonna go save money by going home and eating, liar."

He says going to a Mexican restaurant is the most budget-friendly option, and viewers should send the clip to a friend that discourages them from going out to eat.

"And to the person that's like, 'Hey, maybe you just shouldn't get the chips and queso,'" he adds, "we don't have anything to talk about anyway; I don't wanna be a part of your world."

He doesn't want to be a part of a world where he can't get "a little bit of choriqueso."

"Because I like to live a little," he says before ending his video.

Some viewers noticed that @bandrhomestead's method of saving money is similar to girl math

A comment with over 4,000 likes says, "He just girl mathed so hard because same brother!"

"Welcome to girl math, sir!" another says.

Some viewers disagree with @bandrhomstead's approach and think you'd still save money by cooking at home.

"Buying it gives you the ability to have the ingredients, to have it more than once," one comment says.

Another argues, "You still get more than one serving at home."

However, @bandrhomestead responded to a comment that asked, "Are you eating an entire bag of chips and a block of cheese in one sitting or will you have leftovers?"

He responded saying, "I think you know the answer here."

"Me, personally, I'm eating it all in one sitting," another viewer agrees.

‘The lights and music was supposed to distract you’: Customer orders waffles at restaurant brunch, gets served Eggo frozen waffles https://www.dailydot.com/news/eggo-frozen-waffles-brunch/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 02:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1437844 Customer orders waffles at restaurant brunch, gets served Eggo frozen waffles

Lights are flashing and music is bumping, but it's hard to mistake the frozen food staple that is Eggo waffles.

In her viral video that was viewed 187,000 times, @yourfavmermaid pans between her unamused face and a plate waffles with shrimp. @yourfavmermaid appears to be in a club-like environment as Lumidee’s "Never Leave You (Uh Oooh, Uh Oooh)" plays, and the dark restaurant is lit up by color-changing lights.

“Ya’ll these MFS served Eggo waffles in a brunch place,” she said via text overlay, adding in the caption, "When I say my jaw hit the flooooooooor.”

@yourfavmermaid When I say my jaw hit the flooooooorrrrrr #lamacarenanyc #brunchtok #leggomyeggo ♬ original sound - ThatB-tch.com

Viewers agreed that the customer's waffles look remarkably like the waffles from Eggo, which according to its website, first pioneered the frozen waffle in 1953 with the goal of making breakfast quick and easy.

Now a household staple, those familiar with the product shared their thoughts in the comments.

“Those are definitely Eggos” one viewer wrote.

“They have a very specific taste, there’s no mistaking those waffles,” another suggested.

“At least get the fluffy Belgians ones lol,” @breastylz said.

Viewers also speculated that the club-like environment is there to distract patrons from making the discovery.

“The lights and music was supposed to distract you” @reviseit quipped.

"If we turn the music up, they can't see," another joked.

People are also encouraging the TikToker to name-and-shame the restaurant, wanting it to be held accountable. The TikToker said in a comment she was going to "DM" Keith Lee, the popular food critic on TikTok, who has the platform to make or break restaurants.

The TikToker declined to comment but confirmed with the Daily Dot the restaurant in question is New York City-based La Macarena. La Macarena has 2.9 stars on Yelp.

La Macarena advertises its brunch party on Sundays as "Euphoria Sunday." For $49.99 patrons get access to a day party, bottomless mimosas, and their choice of eggs, french toast, or “Euphoria Waffles” served with a pick of wings or shrimp.

‘I wouldn’t touch Bank of America or Wells Fargo with my worst enemys money’: Customer says Bank of America closed all her credit cards without warning https://www.dailydot.com/news/bank-of-america-credit-cards-closed/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 01:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1437977 Customer says Bank of America closed all her credit cards without warning

A Bank of America customer is contending that she had all of her credit cards with the bank canceled without warning after inquiring about one. That's led her to declare she's glad to now be free of the entity she's done business with for 20 years, that she now cheekily calls "the Bank of Scamerica."

The saga comes from TikTok creator Jessica (@wheresmydamnchapstick) and has received over 359,000 views since being posted on Sunday.

In it, the creator goes into a lengthy story about trying to reset the terms for one problematic credit card on her account and the havoc it wreaked on her finances afterward.

"I just got screwed by Bank of America so hard that it has to be illegal," she states. "I have been a 'valued customer' of Bank of America for 20 f*cking years. For 20 years, I've been enraveled with this monster of a bank, but I have also never once missed a payment on any of my credit cards in 20 years."

She contends that when she arranged to have the card terms redone, a bank representative said the card would have to be canceled, but her other cards with the bank would not be affected.

"I took the deal," Jessica shares. "But what did I just find out today when trying to buy groceries? With not so much as a message in the app, a phone call, or email warning, they canceled every single f*cking credit card that I have with them."

"Obviously, I lost my sh*t and called," she adds. "I finally got to a person; she tells me that Bank of America is just like allowed to look at your cards and your finances and see what other cards you owe and then just decide to close them."

While she wondered how that can be legal, a Bankrate article from April 2023 noted, "You might be surprised to learn a credit card issuer can close your account without notification for a variety of reasons."

Commenters revealed that big banks may have some customer service perceptions to resolve in the TikTok ranks.

"When I tell you I wouldn't touch Bank of America or Wells Fargo with my worst [enemy's] money," one said.

"I don't know how many times I've heard stories like this from BoA account holders," said another, leading Jessica to respond, "They're the worst."

One observed, regarding the fragile financial situation Jessica outlined in her TikTok, "Groceries and rent with credit cards. You're about done."

Several counseled Jessica to investigate bankruptcy, with one noting, "A similar situation pushed me to file bankruptcy. Best decision ever. I was getting credit card and car loan offers 1 month after discharge."

‘I feel behind damn’: 17-year-old claims to make 6 figures a year. Here’s how: https://www.dailydot.com/news/17-year-old-makes-6-figure-salary/ Thu, 23 Nov 2023 00:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1438147 young woman claims to make 6 figures a year.

A 17-year-old content creator claims she has already mastered how to make six figures a year online. She posted a viral video on TikTok giving viewers tips on how to start making money when you’re young.

By Wednesday afternoon, Taylor (tayrankine) had reached over 1.5 million views and 211,000 likes on her video. Viewers ask for more tips on how to jump start their own business. At the start of her video, Taylor says she is 17 years old, and makes 6 figures “strictly" online. “I’m gonna tell you guys how to do it,” she adds.

Taylor first starts by saying all you need to do in order to make money on the internet is to monetize your content. “It’s so much easier than people think,” she says. Her first source of income, and her biggest one, is the personal business she owns through Shopify, an e-commerce business.

“I’ve done it for 4 years now and have steady income there,” she says, “It’s called Boardwalk Beads if you wanna go check it out.” Taylor adds that she will make a video in the future specifically about starting a business through Shopify.

Other than her business, Taylor says her second form of income is YouTube. “A lot of people have this misconception that YouTube is outdated,” she says. “But you can make so much money once you get monetized.”

Taylor says that “transparency,” is not something that people on the internet do, but she thinks it is inspiring to hear about others. “So I’m gonna be kind of transparent with you guys,” she says, “I’m not bragging I just want to kind of inspire you guys to realize the opportunities that are out there.”

Then Taylor says that her most popular YouTube video was a tutorial on how to make bracelets. “I think I made $7,000 in the past two years off that video,” she says.

She points out that her video still makes money today. “That’s the great thing about YouTube, once you post the video it is on the internet forever, it will make you money potentially for the rest of your life,” she says.

Taylor’s third source of income is her Amazon Storefront. Amazon Storefront is a personalized account on Amazon where businesses can market their product to their customers through their own unique page.

Although she says her storefront doesn’t make her too much money, when she posts on TikTok “promoting items that I like, it’s a great way to make some money to invest in your influencing stuff.”

The fourth source of income Taylor mentioned is DePop. “I sell and flip a lot of clothes that I thrift,” she says. “I make it my goal at least once a month to go through my closet and sell everything that I don’t wear,” she adds. Taylor thinks this is a smart way to invest in new things you may need for an influencing career.

Lastly, she says her final source of income is a print on-demand business she has. “I honestly haven’t put as much work into it as I wish I had, but print on demand is a fantastic way to make money if you are an artist, or you like designing things.” Taylor says apps like Etsy and Shopify are good places to sell those items.

Before ending her video, Taylor says she will be making more videos on how to get started on a business. “Let me know what you wanna see in the comments,” she adds.

Viewers immediately flooded Taylor’s comment section questioning her age.

“17? In mars years or..?” one comment says. Taylor responded, “should I be offended by this.”

Another commenter says, “More like 25.” Taylor responds, “I made this in my school parking lot, HAHA.”

“I feel behind damn,” another says.

Taylor posted a second video showing viewers her birthday that is stated on her driver's license. Taylor was born in March 2006, which makes her 17 years old.

Other viewers thank Taylor for sharing this information and ask her for more follow-up videos.

“Please talk more about print on demand,” a comment says. Taylor responds, “I’ll make a vid today.”

Taylor’s video on print-on-demand stores was posted 13 hours ago and had reached over 4,500 views.

‘You’re going to tip us 20% today, right?’: Cheesecake Factory server demands to know why customer didn’t tip after ordering cheesecake to-go https://www.dailydot.com/news/cheesecake-factory-cheesecake-to-go-tip/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 23:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1438245 Cheesecake Factory server demands to know why customer didn't tip after ordering cheesecake to-go

In a viral video, TikToker Ella (@shesmytranquility1) recounted how a Cheesecake Factory server confronted her about not tipping.

She says she ate at the restaurant’s bar with her niece, and at the end of their meal, they ordered cheesecake to go. After placing their to-go order of cheesecake, she says their server gave them the bill with a QR code to scan and pay. “I pay for everything and just hit ‘no’ on the tip 'cause I have cash,” she explains.

She says she then headed over to the cheesecake bar to pick up her cheesecake. While picking up the to-go order, she says she realized she forgot to give her cash tip to the server. She says that when she turned around to make her way back to the bar to leave her tip, she found her server behind her. She says he asked, “Why didn't you tip us today?”

“He was like, ‘What did we do wrong today because you didn’t give us a tip?’” she recalls.

She says she then explained to him that nothing was wrong and that she just forgot to leave her cash tip. “He then was like, ‘Oh, OK. So you are going to tip us 20%, right?’ and I was like ‘Yeah,’” she says.

“I know it seems dramatic, but it was so uncomfortable,” she says, explaining that this interaction happened in front of a crowd of people waiting to be seated and waiting for their to-go orders.

“It just felt like a really awkward thing to do. … When I walked out, I was saying to my niece, ‘Is that real?’ It just felt like it wasn’t real,” she shares. “Even if it was the worst or best service, if he deserved a tip or not, I just feel like you don’t ask someone that.”

This video has 69,000 views and hundreds of comments. Many viewers were appalled by the server's behavior and validated Ella’s feelings about the interaction.

“They should not be asking about a tip. tips are appreciated but should not be expected. That is ridiculous. at that point, I would have said I was going” a viewer commented.

Viewers working in the service industry also weighed in. “As a restaurant owner…he should be fired. You’re correct!” Another shared, “As a server NEVER would I do that.”

‘100% accurate tested and true’: Chipotle customer says they don’t give him full scoops when he asks for double meat. He found a workaround https://www.dailydot.com/news/chipotle-double-meat-wait-for-single-hack/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1437872 Chipotle customer speaking with caption "if you're somebody that orders double meat at Chipotle" (l) Chipotle building (c) Chipotle customer speaking with caption "but this is how you gotta do this" (r)

There seems to be no shortage of TikTok users who've criticized Chipotle for increasing prices. And other folks are less-than-impressed with the amount of food that they're getting lately.

However, there are folks who swear by the popular Mexican-style fast casual franchise, and have even provided helpful money saving tips that can help diners get the most bang for their buck while enjoying Chipotle's grub. Examples include this $5 quesadilla and this $5 burrito bowl. Just beware that these "hacks" may be the luck of the draw and could depend on whether or not the specific location you're visiting that day is "cool" or not.

And now fitness influencer and TikToker Joey Miuccio (@joeymiuccio) has shared a hack he swears gets him more meat when he orders double protein portions at the chain—every time. The method he's referring to is one that has circulated the internet before: Waiting to ask for double meat.

The "hack" is predicated on the psychology of the Chipotle employee knowing that there are two scoops of meat headed a customer's way instead of one. Joey says that if they're aware someone is going to order double meat, then they will probably skimp a bit on each pour. However, if they are thinking it's just a single scoop kind of deal, they they're going to more than likely give a heftier, full size pour.

So by waiting for the employee to "reveal their hand" when it comes to pour protein, they are then put on the spot to replicate the same pour amount for the second scoop, resulting in more protein for you, the patron.

Joey breaks it down in his clip: "If you're somebody that orders double meat at Chipotle this video is for you. I'm pretty sure I found this on TikTok but this is how you gotta do it. This is how you gotta make sure you get enough chicken. If you just walk up and you say yeah I want double chicken, double steak, they'll give it to you, but those scoops are gonna be small. I'm telling you, they, they shrink their scoop size because know you want two. So, what you do is let them do one scoop and then you say, oh I'm sorry can I get double chicken. Anyway, that's how I do my order every single time and I get more chicken. I'm telling you, if you haven't tried it, try it out."

@joeymiuccio Chipotle order hack #fyp #chipotle #eating ♬ All Eyes On Me - Instrumental - Dj Belite

The video has amassed more than 200,000 views since Nov. 16. One commenter found what seemed like a flaw in Joey's ordering technique. "They could easily just make the second scoop smaller lol," they wrote.

However, another user said that they have tried this same methodology when ordering their food at Chipotle and it worked like a charm for them: "100% accurate tested and true."

Someone else expressed that they couldn't seem to understand why the workers at the Chipotles they visit are so stingy with the portions they serve up. "Chipotle act like you’re taking from their personal stash," the user wrote.

Some other TikTokers responded with helpful tips of their own, like staying away from mobile ordering, because workers allegedly skimp on online orders. One user wrote, "Always order in the store too." There appears to be at least some truth to this statement as an employee for the chain has said that they were instructed by management to "half scoop" online orders, as it's believed there will be fewer complaints from folks who don't order their food in person.

This "hack" has been circulating the internet for a while, and was even criticized by a Reddit user who complained about it on the site's r/Chipotle sub. However, there are folks who've said that they've spotted a marked difference between the individual scoop amounts for double protein dishes versus single serving ones.

The Daily Dot has reached out to Chipotle and Joey via email for further comment.

‘It was my first blind date—I find out on the date’: Woman details her surprising date with a billionaire https://www.dailydot.com/news/date-with-a-billionaire/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 22:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1438086 Woman details her surprising date with a billionaire

A strange date with a billionaire has one woman sounding off on social media.

In a viral video that has been viewed over 1 million times, TikToker Texas Garden Fairy (MJ) (@texasgardenfairyx) told a story about a blind date that went all wrong.

"This is a story time of when I went on a date with a billionaire," the woman began in the clip.

After saying no to a woman who offered her tens of thousands of dollars to fly to Dubai to be an "atmosphere model," the TikToker said a friend offered to hook her up with rich men right here in America. In no time, she was set up with a very wealthy guy. In the clip, she said he was from Ohio, but she indicated in the caption that she purposely gave a false location.

"I found out on the date that he was a billionaire," she continued.

It was immediately evident that the man had a lot of money when he pulled up to the date in a black SUV with a personal driver. The woman also initially described her date as "the perfect gentleman."

That was before things went south.

The woman felt uncomfortable when she discovered her date was not just rich, but extremely wealthy.

"Think of, like, the most powerful families who run this country—he's the son of one of those people," she said. She shared that his father's net worth is 70 billion dollars, which she called "sniper money."

Still, the pair went to dinner and even spent all night dancing. Eventually, they decided to go to a friend's house to hang out and smoke. The story got increasingly more alarming moving forward.

The first red flag was the woman's date serenading her and her friend with a guitar for hours.

"Literally starts playing this guitar and singing for two hours," she said. "Like in the Barbie movie."

Then things only got worse.

Texas Garden Fairy said she was tired, so her date offered to take her home. Sadly, he pressured her to have sex with him for the entire ride.

She refused, saying, "I'm not sleeping with anyone I just met."

However, by the time she got home, she noticed she left her bag and keys back at her friend's home, which meant she was locked out. To get into her home, she would have to climb the fire escape.

Her date offered to help her climb the escape and gain entry to her home, which she accepted.

The date went entirely sour when he announced he would not leave her home after they got in. He even continued to beg for sex.

"I'm like, 'No, there's no chance,'" she said.

The TikToker decided to let her date sleep on her sofa, but he tried to get into her bedroom in the middle of the night. Fortunately, she locked her door.

That didn't stop him from banging on her bedroom door, though. When she confronted him for his behavior, he claimed he was looking for a toothbrush.

"I was like, 'No, you weren't,'" the woman responded. "You need to get the f*ck out of my house."

In the comments section, some did not believe the tale.

"Sounds like a made up story," read one comment with over 2,000 likes.

Other viewers tried to guess who the mysterious billionaire was.

"I'm from Ohio," user Sweet Bee Farms commented. "My best guess would be a Wexner."

"Walton family FORSURE! I went on a date with him too," TikToker Yuríana Ramos claimed.

One viewer jokingly commented, "Kendall Roy," the fictional character from HBO's hit TV series Succession, to which Texas Garden Fairy replied, "LMAO i think you already know who [it] is but if you don't DM me."

‘That was an insult’: Worker says ‘billion-dollar company’ usually gifts them a turkey for Thanksgiving. Here’s what she got this year https://www.dailydot.com/news/billion-dollar-company-stopped-giving-turkeys/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 21:30:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1437867 Thanksgiving foods with caption "When the company you work for tells you they don't appreciate their employees even though they make billions a year" (l) turkeys blurred with question mark (c) Thanksgiving foods with caption "When the company you work for tells you they don't appreciate their employees even though they make billions a year" (r)

A Thanksgiving employee appreciation basket has become the topic of a hot debate on TikTok. The gift was documented in a now-viral clip uploaded to the popular social media platform by a user who goes by Tray (@trayc01).

In her video, she is sure to not specifically name the company she works for or show any branding that would expose its identity. However, Tray had no qualms about listing all of the products that were part of the gift basket. She also questioned why the company, which is earning billions of dollars a year, decided to stop giving turkeys to its workers.

"When the company you work for tells you they don't appreciate their employees even though they make billions a year," Tray writes in a text overlay of the clip.

In the video, several canned foods, along with a box of macaroni and cheese and a packet of Swiss Miss chocolate are splayed out on a counter.

"I'm probably gonna get in so much trouble for making this TikTok, but I'm gonna hide the logo from where I work. But if you work there you know exactly where this is from. Usually, we get a turkey for Thanksgiving from them, but this year they changed it," Tray says with a laugh, referring to the assortment of non-perishable goods before her.

"Cause apparently, I don't know if they're just not making enough money, which I'm saying that very sarcastically because they're making plenty, but this is what they gave us instead of a turkey."

Tray goes on to rattle off what her company thought a good Thanksgiving day "Thank You" would be: "They gave us a box of macaroni and cheese. Two envelopes of hot chocolate. Two Rolos, a little KitKat, one can of green beans, cause that's gonna feed a family, a can of cranberry. One can of corn, one can of cream of chicken, a box of Stove Top, and then instead of a turkey this year, this," she says, tapping a decorated box on top of the counter, but she's sure to not show too much of its branding, which would give away who her employer is.

"It's a bundt cake, a bundt cake okay. A frozen bundt cake. So, that is what they decided to give us instead of a turkey this year for our family," she says at the end of the video before it ultimately closes out.

Viewers who saw the clip had several different takes on Tray's commentary, however, there seemed to be a clear divide between those who thought that her company was being stingy versus those who said she should be grateful for anything she was given.

"Most employers don’t give anything for Thanksgiving. Count your blessings Sis! It is thanksgiving," one person said.

Another TikTok user remarked, "I've never got a Thanksgiving gift from any employer for over 30yrs."

However, there were a ton of folks who said that they thought the gift was "insulting" or that they "would rather get nothing," than the assortment Tray displayed in her clip.

One TikToker said that those who were espousing the idea that Tray should've been thankful for the holiday gift package were not grasping why she was so miffed about it: "People missing the point. If you are paid adequately, you don’t need “gifts”. The turkey was instead of money, and now it’s Mac and cheese instead."

This was a sentiment echoed by another user who also called out the gratitude gang: "The comment section is concerning, I'm glad everyone is ok with this hamster wheel, 'be greatful' seriously people?"

Another viewer thought the gift package was so bad they quipped that Tray could've simply headed over to a food bank. "They could have just given you the number to a food bank fr," they wrote.

Since 2021, inflation has spiked considerably in the United States, jacking up the overall cost of living for Americans, including grocery store and supermarket prices. Saving a family from having to purchase a large turkey during the holidays could make a major difference in their holiday planning.

According to BetterUp, one of the top ten reasons most employees leave their jobs is because they believe they're being disrespected at work. And Tray, while working for an alleged billion-dollar corporation, certainly feels like she was slapped in the face with the medley of dry goods handed over to her.

‘I thought I was getting jalapeño poppers for this guy’: Uber Eats driver accepts Panda Express order. The customer asks him to make an extra stop https://www.dailydot.com/news/uber-eats-driver-pick-up-poppers/ Wed, 22 Nov 2023 21:00:00 +0000 https://www.dailydot.com/?p=1438004 hand holding phone with Uber Eats on screen (l) Uber driver with caption "please stop by Zorbaz for poppers" (c) Panda Express sign (r)

There is an old phrase advising people to simply ask for what they want in order to see if someone is open to providing it: A closed mouth does not get fed.

But there is also something to be said for gauging the time and place to make sure the request is appropriate. With the rise of delivery apps and runner-based services, the kinds of requests made to delivery drivers grow increasingly out of pocket.

Most recently, a customer on Uber Eats is alleged to have asked their driver to pick up a little extra something to add to the order, in exchange for around $20: Poppers. One of the members of @fortsofficial, a musical group based in Phoenix, Arizona, says the request was added through the food delivery app's notes section—and he though he was being asked to pick up jalapeño poppers from a Mexican restaurant.

"I just got done doing an Uber Eats order and the guy lured me with a Panda Express order," the band member says in the video. "He puts in the notes, 'Please stop by Zorba's for poppers, will reimburse you twofold should be an extra $10 or $15.' I thought it was a Mexican place. I thought it was jalapeño poppers for this guy that he forgot to get, okay."

"Turns out it was drugs," he says. "I get to the place and it was a sex store. For a second, I'm not going to lie, I thought about it just because an extra $20 is nice. He called me immediately and was like, 'Hey, I'm not seeing these poppers out here.' I was like, no, sorry dude, I can't deliver drugs on Uber, sorry. He's like, 'Oh yeah, I'm so sorry it was a weird request anyway.'"

The video has amassed more than 7,000 views since it was posted on Nov. 16. Some viewers shared that they were similarly confused by the request to pick up poppers from a business called Zorba's.

"When you said poppers and Zorbas I was like ohhh what’s kind of food they got at the Greek place?" one commenter wrote. "Jalepeno?? Maybe something with a mediterrain flair. But nooooo."

"I heard zorbas and was like huh sounds familiar I was thinking of ZUPAS but then saw your city and I was like oh no," another commenter wrote. "ZORBAS!"

Others shared that they themselves had asked their delivery drivers if they could grab some additional items, although of a different nature.

"I’ve asked my driver that was delivering alcohol if they could also grab me some wraps, they did and we laughed as I handed over the cash and ID lol," one commenter wrote.

"I've had my ubereats driver pick me up cigars a few times," another commenter wrote.
